Magic vs. Nuggets recap: Melo’s last game in Denver?…

The fans want to get as much Melo as possible as his days in Denver appear to be numbered.

The fans want to get as much Melo as possible as his days in Denver appear to be numbered.

If tonight’s Nuggets victory over the Magic proves to be Carmelo Anthony’s last in a Nuggets uniform, then he leaves on a high note having put up 35 points (on a very impressive 14-21 shooting) and grabbing 11 rebounds.

There was nothing 70′s about “70′s Night” at Pepsi Center other than the final score.  I’ll get to the game recap and the ongoing Carmelo Anthony situation shortly, but I first must point out – yet again – that the Nuggets organization appears to be clueless when it comes to in-game presentation and promotion.  Having a “70′s Night” is a great idea if properly executed.  Instead, the Nuggets dropped the ball.

You’d think on a night promoted as “70′s Night” that the Nuggets would play against a team they played against in the 1970′s, like the Spurs, Nets or Pacers.  You’d think that the Nuggets and their opponent would wear retro jerseys hearkening back to that era.  You’d think that Pepsi Center – given the countless empty seats in the building all season long – would roll back the prices for beverages and food back to 70′s prices for one night.  You’d think that the Nuggets would roll out a few legends from the 70′s like David Thompson, Spencer Haywood, Byron Beck, Bobby Jones and so on either before tipoff or at halftime.… Continue reading

Orlando Magic Lose Quentin Richardson for Tonight’s Game against Denver Nuggets, but Two Other Players Cleared

Photo

The Orlando Magic will have one less solid defensive option to contend with Denver Nuggets superstar Carmelto Anthony this evening. As Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel reports, Quentin Richardson bruised his left elbow tangling with Dwight Howard during Monday’s practice and X-Rays taken today proved inconclusive.

Richardson has served as the Magic’s starting small forward 18 times in 24 games, but gave way to Rashard Lewis two games ago, freeing the power forward slot for Brandon Bass to man. He received his only Did Not Play-Coach’s Decision against the L.A. Clippers on Sunday night, with coach Stan Van Gundy electing to deploy Mickael Pietrus as Lewis’ backup.

Richardson ranks seventh on the team in per-game scoring (7.4) and ties Lewis for fourth in rebounding (4.3). Signed primarily for his ability to knock down open three-pointers, Richardson’s shooting 33.3 percent from the outside and 38.5 percent overall.

However, some injury news for tonight’s game favors the Magic. Pietrus bruised his knee in the win against L.A., but the team has cleared him to play tonight. Point guard Chris Duhon, who may have lost his second-string job to Jason Williams, will return from the back strain which held him out of Sunday’s game as well. Most importantly, Nuggets coach George Karl termed Chauncey Billups, his all-star point guard and a Magic-killer of the highest order, as “doubtful” due to a wrist injury.

Orlando 94 – Clippers 85 – Game Recap

Here are the scoring leaders for the Clippers tonight:

  • Eric Gordon – 28
  • Blake Griffin – 27
  • Rest of Team – 30

Nine guys, playing 157 minutes, managed to put up just 30 points total, on 12 for 38 shooting. There’s no way the Clippers are going to beat a decent opponent when the third leading scorer on the team has just 8 points.

It was strange in fact that the Clippers managed to get back into this game at all. They were behind 35 to 14 at the end of the first quarter, and after giving up the first five points of the second, the lead stretched to 26. From there, the Clippers chipped away, getting it all the way down to six with nine minutes still to play. But they could get no closer. I’m not sure how they got that close without anyone other than Griffin or Gordon capable of making a shot.

Perhaps the most amazing stat of the game is that Gordon was +3 in his 41 minutes. In his first stint at the beginning of the game, he was 0 for 6 and the Clippers fell behind by 13. He left for a seven minute rest, and when he came back the team was behind by 25. Once he got a couple of shots to go, the Clippers outplayed the Magic the rest of the way. But the hole was just too deep.… Continue reading

The Back Story:

First meeting of the season. The Magic swept the two games last season.

The Big Picture:

The Clippers have faced struggling teams in their last three losses. The Trailblazers had lost six in a row. The Lakers had lost four of six. The Grizzlies had lost four of five. In each case, the Clippers had a chance to win, one might even say they should have won, but they didn’t. Missed free throws in Portland, and ridiculous turnovers against the Lakers and Grizz snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. The Clippers have been in every game they’ve played for the last three weeks (the last time they were blown out was November 18 at Indiana). Their four wins in those eleven games is infinitely better than the one win in their first dozen; but they still have no clue how to win a close one. Tonight in Staples Center they face another team on a losing streak, albeit one that is supposed to be among the league’s elite. One wonders, watching Blake Griffin’s body slump at the end of the last two heartwrenching defeats, if all the… Continue reading

Orlando Magic / Denver Nuggets Game Wins NBA TV Fan Night Voting

Thanks to NBA TV Fan Night voting, the Orlando Magic’s first game in their new black alternate uniforms will reach a national television audience. Indeed, the NBA announced fans selected this Tuesday’s game between the Magic and Denver Nuggets, in Denver’s Pepsi Center, for Fan Night. It’ll air on NBA TV at 9 PM, with host Ernie Johnson joining analysts Chris Webber and Kevin McHale for pre-game coverage at 8 PM.

Fan Night allows NBA fans to select one game per week, via online vote at www.nba.com/fannight, for NBA TV to broadcast nationally. Tuesday’s game marks the first occasion this season when fans have voted a Magic game, but this one was a landslide win for Orlando; 82 percent of the poll respondents selected the Magic/Nuggets contest this week.

Orlando split the season series with Denver last season as each team defended its home court.

With enough support, Orlando can make two straight Fan Night appearances, as their game against the Dallas Mavericks on December 21st is eligible the following week. Voting for that game opens December 14th at 8 AM and closes on December 16th at midnight. Again, fans can cast their ballots at www.nba.com/fannight.

Game 22 Recap: Blazers 97, Magic 83

Didn't hold him down all the way, but enough.

Didn’t hold him down all the way, but enough.

In a Nutshell

Dwight Howard proves himself worth twice the price of admission but his teammates come in somewhere south of a chalupa as the Blazers’ perimeter players destroy their Magic counterparts in an unexpectedly easy (and energetic) Portland win.

Game Flow

Portland lost this game early on and they weren’t getting it back.  Let’s just state that from the top.  Portland came out with a 24-second violation on their first possession, looking confused and flat-footed.  Dwight Howard scored on a simple post move on Orlando’s first play.  That set the tone for the first period.  The Magic had more fire and more firepower, the latter concentrated fully in their chiseled center.  Howard scored in an array of post moves so impressive and smooth they would have made Kareem Abdul-Jabbar look twice.  Seriously, he looked like a wholly unstoppable force out there, not just because of his obvious physical attributes but because he was playing basketball.  The Blazers looked silly by comparison.  The first sign that the Magic had this game in the bag was Howard’s 18 points in the first period.  The second sign was predicted in the Blazersedge game preview:  Portland’s offense consisted solely of shooting and missing outside jumpers.  The Magic rebounded, walked the ball up the court, tossed it to Dwight, and racked up another score.  The third sign came in the second period when… Continue reading

Game 22 Preview: Magic vs. Trail Blazers

Time to play strong, kid. The rest of you too.

Steve Dykes – AP

Time to play strong, kid. The rest of you too.

Game Time:  7:30 p.m.  TV:  TNT

The Orlando Magic come into this game with several advantages.  They have a 15-6 record.  They have a 6-3 record on the road.  And they have one big hulking beast of a center for which the Trail Blazers will have to compensate.  Calling Dwight Howard “unstoppable” is a misnomer.  Plenty of teams stop him…or at least keep him below 20 points.  But Portland’s “big” men are prone to foul trouble and once you get past Marcus Camby the roster gets pretty thin in the tall department.  Plus nobody stops Howard from rebounding.  The Blazers don’t do well when they get outrebounded.  The most likely option for Portland is to throw immediate help to whomever guards Big Dwight.  The tale of this game may be how well the rest of Orlando’s roster responds.

The best way to describe the rest of that roster is “A bunch of guys that other teams thought had promise”.   Jameer Nelson is their homegrown boy, a genuine passer and three-point threat at point guard.  J.J. Redick is another original draft pick and three-point shooter, though he’s really, really not hitting them this year.  After that come names that were somewhat overrated on their old teams and have now found a home in Orlando:  Vince Carter, Rashard Lewis, Brandon Bass, Quentin Richardson, Chris Duhon.  Some are long enough in the tooth… Continue reading

Game Recap: Hawks End Long Dry Spell in Orlando With 80-74 Victory

The Hawks 80-74 victory over Orlando on Monday night was a stark turn of events for the the two teams that dates back to last season. This time it was a Hawks team that grinded out a victory in a less than stellar played game from either side. This was also a game where new Hawks coach Larry Drew showed a willingness to change in an effort to grab a victory. In case you missed it, the Hawks started a big lineup that featured Marvin Williams at shooting guard, Josh Smith at small forward, Al Horford at power forward, and Jason Collins at center. The decision to make the change in the starting lineup was made a little easier with Joe Johnson out but the decision to place Collins on Howard with no double teams was different than the way the Hawks have approached this team in the past.

By single covering Howard, the Hawks were able to stay on Magic shooters and weren’t constantly trying to chase following a rotation. Without Jameer Nelson, the Magic were missing that penetrating force that usually draws the defense in and that led to Vince Carter having to try and go out and win this game alone. Add to the fact that the Hawks big men were able to take Howard out of his comfort zone which led to him only scoring 14 points on… Continue reading

Robbins: Jameer Nelson and J.J. Redick Leave the Orlando Magic’s Road Trip, Will Miss Tonight’s Game at Milwaukee Bucks

Photo

Jonathan Daniel – Getty Images

The Orlando Magic will once again find themselves rather shorthanded tonight when they visit the Milwaukee Bucks. All-Star center Dwight Howard and reserve swingman Mickael Pietrus returned to Orlando last night due to a stomach virus, and now Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel reports starting point guard Jameer Nelson and backup shooting guard J.J. Redick have also embarked for home, suffering from the same ailment. Their absence, coupled with Ryan Anderson’s sprained right mid-foot, means the Magic will only dress eight players for tonight’s contest. They are Malik Allen, Brandon Bass, Vince Carter, Chris Duhon, Marcin Gortat, Rashard Lewis, Quentin Richardson, and Jason Williams.

Some NBA teams can get by with playing an eight-man rotation on a nightly basis, but Magic coach Stan Van Gundy tends to use nine or 10 guys. As a result, it’ll be another night of unusual rotations for the team and extended minutes for the players.

Orlando handled Detroit last night, 104-91, thanks to some splendid play from Bass, Carter, and Gortat. Whether it can maintain that level on the back end of a back-to-back remains, obviously, to be seen.
